Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' Is the First Vinyl Record to Outsell CDs Since 1987
The “Mastermind” singer continues to break records.
Taylor Swift keeps breaking records with her latest album, Midnights. It’s been reported that the hit LP is the first vinyl to outsell CDs since 1987. So far, Midnights has sold roughly 800,000 vinyl copies.
“It’s a watershed moment for the entire music industry,” Kim Bayley, the chief executive of the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), told The Guardian. “After the CD came along and pretty much wiped out the vinyl business, few of us would have believed a renaissance like this was possible.”
Despite the fact that CD sales have decreased, it doesn’t mean they will disappear entirely. In fact, it’s quite possible that CDs will become popular in the future. “Will the CD disappear? Of course its prospects don’t look good right now, but it offers a permanence and robustness and quality which is unique,” said Bayley. “Given how wrong we were about vinyl, it would be foolish to write off the CD forever.”
Midnights has become one of the biggest albums of Swift’s career for many reasons. Thanks to the record, she became the first artist in history to occupy the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
