UPDATE (June 14, 2023): A production date for Sony’s El Muerto, starring Bad Bunny as Juan Carlos Sanchez, a wrestler with superhuman strength, has finally been unveiled.

Filming for the upcoming project is reportedly slated to begin on August 7, 2023. However, the film won’t premiere until January 12, 2024.

The official synopsis for the forthcoming movie reads as follows: “A wrestler gains superpower through a mystical mask who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison.”

Last April, it was announced that Bad Bunny would be starring in the forthcoming movie.

Stay tuned for more updates.

ORIGINAL STORY (April 26, 2022): Bad Bunny keeps making history. The Puerto Rican artist has been cast in El Muerto, making him the first-ever Latino to headline a live-action Marvel film.

“To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible … so exciting,” Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, told the crowd at CinemaCon.

In the comics, El Muerto is known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, a Mexican wrestler who is granted powers through his mask. The superhero made his first appearance in the 2006 comic “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” No. 6 by Peter David and Roger Cruz, in which he challenges Spider-Man to a wrestling match.

It still remains unclear if Spider-Man will make an appearance in the upcoming film. However, anything is possible when it comes to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

El Muerto is slated to hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
