Not Dating Someone Because They're Bisexual Is Biphobic, Here's Why

Inside the trending Twitter debate.

Twitter is known for hosting uncensored debates and this week’s discourse is all about bisexuality. The question “would you rather find out your man is cheating or bisexual?,” split Twitter’s timeline into two. Each side shared their perspective, which ended with a great lesson from the LGBTQ+ community.

Several women shared that they would never date a bisexual man because that wasn’t their preference. But, the reasons shared were, in reality, harmful stigmas. Some confessed that they were too insecure to worry about their male partner cheating with not only women, but men too. Others implied that bisexual men were just one stop away from coming out as gay, while others shared worries of contracting sexually transmitted infections.

The problem with these not-so-hot-takes is that they all project personal insecurities and stigmas onto bisexual individuals. It’s important to note that worrying about bisexual people cheating and passing an STI onto you is an extension of the stigma that came with the U.S. AIDS crisis in the 80s. Gay and bisexual men are just as susceptible to STIs as any other human being. Lastly, cheating is something that can take place in any style of relationship and many straight women willingly work through similar issues with their partners. Why is it a dealbreaker with bisexual men?

If a bisexual man simply doesn’t tickle your fancy because they’re unattractive or they trigger an irritating pet peeve — that’s normal. But, if you wouldn’t date a bisexual man because they may cheat on you with a man, pass an STI onto you or you think they’re just one stop away from being gay, that’s biphobic.

It’s important to remain accountable and check insecurities so you don’t project onto people who are already marginalized in society.
