Singer Rosalía Gets Ruthless About Her Sexual Approach
The Spanish artist opens up about her refusal to internalize shame.
Rosalía recently let the world in on her sexual prowess with her track “Hentai” after years of alluding to her sensual nature. As she evolves into a global star, she seductively unveils more layers – while reminding the world that she can’t be tamed.
The Spanish singer has been open about her strong range of influences such as Lil’ Kim and Aretha Franklin, which give her music its own unique, seductive sound. Transitioning from being a Spanish fav to a global star has helped her explore her many layers, she told GQ UK. “Because if you are in the center – in your center on a creative level – you really write from honesty, produce from honesty, arrange from honesty.”
But that honesty appeared to rub fans the wrong way when her creativity flowed into the sexually explicit track “Hentai.” The lyrics read: “I want to ride you like I ride my bike/ Make me a tape, Spike mode/ I whipped it till it got stiff/ Second is fucking you, the first is God.”
The track made well-versed producer Pharrell clutch his pearls, but the pure artistry that oozed from the track was undeniable. “When I shared 15 seconds of “Hentai” earlier this year,” she said, “many people liked it and I was very happy and thankful, but many people were also putting their hands to their heads, and I kept thinking, ‘but Lil’ Kim has been writing explicit lyrics all her life!’”
The rising global star knows that her approach can trigger confusion in fans. Especially considering that she’s a woman who owns her sexual nature so boldly. “When a woman does not do what she is expected to do, people are often ruthless,” she shared. As a result, she’s matching that ruthless energy. “In the end, I say: MOTOMAMI and move on.”
