Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala Weight Loss Is Not To Be Celebrated
The reality star’s latest look is starting some serious conversations.
Kim Kardashian revealed that in order to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s dress for the Met Gala, she had to shed a total of 16 pounds and her rapid weight loss has not been met with positive reactions.
Kardashian explained that initially, she was heartbroken to discover that she couldn’t fit into the dress and was determined to lose the weight required in order to wear it to this year’s event. In just three weeks, the reality star had met her goal, which led to a series of conversations surrounding body image, rapid weight loss and diet culture.
Riverdale actor Lili Reinhart shared her thoughts on Kardashian’s decision via Instagram, stating, “To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala [when] you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word… [the] ignorance is other-worldly disgusting.” While Reinhart didn’t directly name Kardashian, the comments are pretty specific and come shortly after the reality star opened up about the process of fitting into the dress.
For many watchers of this year’s Met Gala, it’s not so much the lengths that the SKIMS founder went to in order to fit into the dress, but the glamorizing of the process itself. Discussing it so openly, almost as a point of pride, is what makes the act so damaging for younger women. In a world where body positivity is now the norm, it appears that we still have quite a long way to go.
