James Cameron Confirms 'Avatar' 4 and 5
The second film, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ is nearing its breakeven point.
With Avatar: The Way of Water, otherwise known as Avatar 2, nearing its breakeven point, it seems like the movie is set to receive a fourth and fifth sequel, in addition to the anticipated third film.
The series’ director James Cameron recently spoke of his plans on expanding the Avatar franchise on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” He shared, “It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this.” The director continued, “I’m gonna have to do these other sequels. know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay.”
It was previously known that the production costs for Avatar 2 were so high that, in order to break even, the movie would have to make more than $2 billion USD. With the film making $1 billion USD in just 14 days, it appears that the third, fourth and fifth sequels of the series are all confirmed with release dates in 2024, 2026 and 2028, respectively.
Cameron added, “I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can — we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
Avatar 3 is currently scheduled to release on December 20, 2024.
