2023: The Year of the Clit Stimulator
How clit stimulators knocked dildos out of first place — and taught men how to be better lovers.
At the top of 2023, sex toy and pleasure brand, LELO, revealed its top trends for 2023, predicting everyone’s favorite — the clit stimulator — would be the trend of the year. As 2023 comes to a close, LELO’s prediction proves to be correct.
According to LELO, the world is becoming more “flexible and open-minded.” This is seen through the rise in vulnerability surrounding sex and taboo subcultures, like kink on TikTok. As it stated in its trend report, “Ladies have been put on the sidelines of sexual pleasure for decades for many reasons, mainly patriarchy that went hand in hand with the physiological misunderstanding of the mysteries of female orgasm and the existence of multiple orgasms, made available only to the fairer sex.”

During the pandemic, women with vulvas went inward and really learned how to pleasure themselves. Women became more open about the failure that was sex education and how their pleasure was ignored. pertaining to female pleasure — let alone the pleasures of masturbation. The orgasm gap became mainstream knowledge and for lack of a better term, the girls were fed up. Factor in the fact that male partners could rarely find the clit… it was up to women and the sex industry to delivers those mind-blowing orgasms.
Alongside this sex self-education, clitoral stimulators began to flood the market, helping women feel the difference between clitoral and penetrative orgasms, since many could not orgasm during partnered sex. As LELO stated in its trend report, “40% to 60% of women masturbate, and only 18% of women can orgasm from penetration.” Due to this, many sex toys like the Rose Toy and LELO’s Sila Cruise began to trend and offer vulva owners their first orgasm and for some, their first female ejaculation experience.
With this research, LELO predicted there would be more developments in the clitoral stimulation department. So naturally, we thought… is LELO teasing new developments? The answer was yes, as it launched the powerful Sona 2 in July 2023. But it turns out, the entire industry was, too.
By December 2023, clitoral massagers garnered all the hype. Voight, most known for its cult-following, released the Boy Tears clit sucker with the iconic tagline “What the boys won’t do, their tears will.” The product won The Hypebae Best 2023 “Sex Toy” category and stole the spotlight in every episode of Servin’ Sex, a sex-positive podcast discussing sex and wellness industry trends and the minds leading its growth.
Simultaneously, a study conducted by sexual wellness brand, Lovehoney, discovered that “90% of men” could finally find the clit — a common issue amongst the gender. This leaves us with one question: did the rise of the clit stimmy give men the boost in sex ed they needed? We may never know, but one thing’s for sure: a win is a win.
