The concept of couture is one that comes naturally to a lot of the South Asian community. From lavish wedding outfits to heavy costume jewelry, the idea of excess is pretty much in our blood and continues to permeate and influence Western design. One pioneer within the couture movement is Gaurav Gupta, an Indian couture designer whose work recently made its way onto the Grammy’s red carpet, worn by Cardi B. While the name might seem new to some of us — he’s already a pretty big deal.

Gupta launched his eponymous brand almost 20 years ago after he graduated from London‘s Central Saint Martins College of Art. Since then, the designer rose to fame within the world of Bollywood and more recently, has begun to make a name for himself all over the world. Aside from making his Paris Couture Week debut this season, Gupta’s pieces have already been worn by the likes of Lizzo, Ashanti, Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Minogue.

What makes Gupta’s work so special is the designer’s description of it and the process in which Gupta draws from his heritage and translates elements of it into his future-facing design. “Indian at its core,” the brand’s website states, explaining that the designs aim to fuse together “indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques” with contemporary silhouettes and wearable pieces, with his high-fashion take on the traditional sari being one of his more notable offerings.

Take a look at the designer’s latest creation above, and head to Gaurav Gupta’s website to find out more.
