Christine Sun Kim Explores the Edges of Sign Language With New Exhibition at Somerset House
A commission part of Somerset House Studios’ “Hyper Functional, Ultra Healthy” program.
Multidisciplinary sound artist Christine Sun Kim presents her new commission for Somerset House Studios, Edges of Sign Language –an exhibition exploring her relationship with American Sign Language and spoken languages, as well as examining sound as a social currency in society.
The showcase sees Kim’s signature charcoal drawings, along with shaped canvases, musical notations, written language and infographics that illustrate the limitations of physical space through an American Sign Language lens. Through them, the American Berlin-based artist seeks to “Visualize the tensions between notations, marks, shapes and, most importantly, edges.”
Edges of Sign Language was developed during Kim’s residence at Somerset House Studios with the support of Goethe-Institut London and are part of the Hyper Functional, Ultra Healthy program, which focuses on disability justice and commissions artists who engage with the space of health and care.
Christine Sun Kim’s Edges of Sign Language exhibition is on view at Somerset House’s Gallery 31 from March 31 until May 21, 2023.
