Artist Sophie Tea Spent 24 Hours Painting in a Box to "Reclaim the Nude"
“You will be able to watch her eat, sleep, pee and paint for an entire day, in the name of art.”
UK-based feminist artist Sophie Tea unveils her latest work, an art auction stunt named after her coffee book Send Nudes.
As of March 28, Sophie Tea was trapped in a white box, vowing to “reclaim the nude.” Inspired by Tea’s “Quarantine Studies” collection she created in Sydney during a two-week hotel lockdown stay, the installation breaks it down to the basics. Featuring “only a £4 blow-up mattress, a toilet, a canvas, paints and brushes,” Tea will paint a 48”x60” canvas that will later be auctioned off. As of this morning, the live stream broadcasted via Instagram, TikTok, YouTub
Although the concept may seem utterly insane to some, the auction stunt alao holds inspiration from icons like Marina Abramović‘s performance art and illusionist David Blaine’s ”Above the Below” “where he commenced a 44-day fast in 2003, inside a box suspended 30 feet in the air above the River Thames in London,” Tea’s team shared.

In the exclusive press release, Tea unveils her hopes for this project, as well as why she holds it so close to home. ”I hope that we can create a more nuanced approach that allows for artistic expression whilst still protecting users from explicit or harmful content. This will be a space for women’s bodies to be celebrated and seen as they should, beautiful and powerful.”
The 48”x60” artwork titled “Send Nudes,” will be available for bidding at approximately £8,000 to £12,000. Participate in pre-bidding via Tate Ward Auction House and Artsy.
