Janelle Monáe Forced to Release Censored Version of “Lipstick Lover”
The artist reveals she was forced to provide a “clean virgin.”
After a successful launch of NSFW ”Lipstick Lover,” music video Janelle Monáe reveals a censored request was made.
“After much back and forth and private court dates I decided to release the sinsored ‘clean virgin’ of “Lipstick Lover” against my will,” Monáe posted on their Twitter. According to their tweet, they had no intentions of “cleaning” up the music video, but ultimately had to conform legally.
Monaáe’s declaration is an iconic act of defiance for artists who frequently have to abide by labels and management, instead of the creative vision. In recent weeks, Monáe has pushed several boundaries from freeing the nipple onstage to embracing nudity, as a nod to The Age of Pleasure, their upcoming album releasing June 6.
