Met Gala 2023 Glam Predictions: Karl Lagerfeld-Inspired Bouffants

Paying homage to the legend’s infamous hairstyle.

Happy First Monday in May, aka Met Gala Day. The theme for the 2023 exhibition and gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” paying homage to Lagerfeld, the legend, the designer, and the many houses he designed for, including his eponymous brand and other heritage favorites such as Balmain, Chloé, Fendi and of course, Chanel. A-listers will have much inspiration to serve their best hair and makeup looks, but we predict the most recreated style in rotation is the icon’s signature raked low ponytail.

On the fashion scene, icons etch themselves out to greatness with signature styles. Vogue‘s Anna Wintour is known for her integral bob, and Lagerfeld is known for his chic, low ponytail. After years of rocking curly and long hair, the designer decided in 1976 to commit to wearing a ponytail, immediately marking him as a rising fashion figure.

One of the fun facts about the “Lagerfeld Pony” is that it wasn’t always the stoic, ice-white shade. Before the change, his tresses were a grayish color, and holding true to vanity, he decided to mix it up with a tad bit of white powder for his infamous look.

For the evening, we can’t 100% predict that the A-listers will stunt the pink carpet with white powder in their hair, but it’s safe to surmise that there will be a plethora of ponytail styles dedicated to the late designer.
