The Power of Zendaya's Red Lipstick Is Enough To Make Grown Men Cry

Zendaya may have been decked out in a Bottega Veneta dress, but her bold, blue-red lipstick set the tone for a lady dressed in red — showcasing the power of red lipstick.

In a short history lesson, red lipstick has been a symbol of power for centuries. Ancient Sumerian men and women used crushed gemstones to create a red pigment for their lips. In the Elizabethan era, Queen Elizabeth I was known to wear a bright red lipstick made from cochineal. In World War II, women who worked in factories were encouraged to wear red lipstick to boost morale.

Fast-forwarding to the present day, makeup artist Raoul Alejandre, Valentino Beauty‘s Global makeup artist, created a vision of love on Zendaya with a bold lip, balanced out with minimal eye makeup that featured highlighter dusted beautifully along the inner corner of her eyes and XL lashes. Her cheeks were flushed with a rosy blush that complemented the fierceness of her contour and highlighter on all of the high points of her face.

Any woman or beauty aficionado knows that you let the lippie do all the talking when wearing red lipstick. As Zendaya is a master of not going in for overkill, her hair was styled in an unfussy updo. Smoothed into an opulent, slicked-back top-knot, her hairstylist was sure to keep the attention right where we needed it to be: the lips.
