The 'Cruel Intentions' Reboot Is Almost Here — And Viewers Are Not Impressed
Here’s everything we know about the controversial reboot.
As the reboot of the classic 90s film, Cruel Intentions arrives, fans share their honest thoughts on the new trailer — and what it’s missing (hint: its the twisted sex and characters).
Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Cruel Intentions, based on the 18th-century novel Dangerous Liaisons, will return as an eight-episode series. The original film followed two siblings as they seduced the “pure” Annette (played by Witherspoon) into breaking her pact against pre-marital sex. The reboot was originally created for Freevee, however, it was later picked up by Amazon Prime.
However, those who were yearning for the film’s provocative essence don’t seem impressed. “I’ll be watching but to be honest it’s not giving cruel intentions, it’s giving Gossip Girl,” one YouTube user commented on the trailer. Another stated, “Why does it look so tame? The original Intentions, even with the softened ending, still felt Cruel. This doesn’t.”
Ahead of its launch, publications reported that the reboot would feature a new plotline with much higher stakes this go-around. “Set in Washington, D.C., the series follows two ruthless step-siblings who will do anything to stay at the top of the Greek Life hierarchy at their elite college. When a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputations… including seducing the daughter of the U.S. vice president.”
The series is set to release on November 21.
