Cone Bras Are Making a Comeback

The c-nty garment is making appearances both on and off the runway.

Known for its aggressive, yet feminine shape, the cone bra has always been an It-girl item donned by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Madonna. Now, the garment trends and takes new forms, inviting a new wave of sex-positivity both off and off the runway.

Cone bras, and its sister-garment with even more padding, the bullet bra, date back to the 1950s. Offering an extra “umph,” it was the 1950s version of a push-up bra and the item for women. Despite its already existing allure, rebellious pop star Madonna became the cone bra queen. You type “cone bra” into Google, and Madonna will undoubtedly be the fashion reference. Created by French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, Madonna’s pink satin cone bra was introduced to the world during her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990 and solidified her claim to fame.

Before we knew it, the pink bra laced with bows became synonymous with Madonna and 25 years later, it sold for $52,000 USD at the Christie’s Pop Culture auction. Gaultier revisited the garment for Madonna in 2012 for Madonna’s MDNA tour, this time with a BDSM cage-like structure.

Its recent resurgence arrived on Beyoncé’s Renaissance carpet – and respectfully almost upstaged her. That was until she arrived with platinum blonde hair. None other than her Destiny’s Child sister Kelly Rowland donned a metallic cone bra dress and Marilyn Monroe-inspired updo. Most likely a nod to Monroe’s love of the cone bra, too. Elsewhere, Miley Cyrus donned a cone bra dress, with hers designed by Maison Margiela. Seen on the Grammy’s red carpet, she paired the number with bouffant-inspired hair making a reference to her honorary godmother, Dolly Parton.

Cone bras hit Fall/Winter 2024 runways via designers like Dilara Findikoglu in a more casual iteration. New York-based brand Vaquera added the garment to arguably one of the most expensive dresses a woman will wear in her lifetime: the wedding dress. It’s important to note that every iteration of the cone bra on FW24 runways was rooted in a show inspired by femininity and reclamation of power. What stronger power move than a f-cking cone bra.

It makes sense that the cunty garment remains a performance artist staple worn on stages for the world to see. It’s for the It girls – and it demands warranted attention.
