Nicole McLaughlin and Vans Reunite To Drop a Hiking Backpack-Inspired Shoe

Why carry a backpack when your sneakers can do the job?

You might already be familiar with Nicole McLaughlin and her wildest creations. The upcycling mastermind is known for turning everyday objects into wearable (and wonderfully weird) fashion, like her “Jansport Backpack Panty” or a recent “Pita Chip Vest.” Her approach to sustainable design is anything but ordinary. We only spoke to the designer back in December about her team-up with PUMA but she’s already back at it — building on their Vault by Vans partnership from last March.

Dubbed the Slip-On RS, the sneaker is a reimagined take on Vans’ classic slip-on silhouette. In true McLaughlin fashion, this isn’t just another shoe — it’s an adventure-ready, multi-purpose masterpiece. The standout feature is a rucksack pocket built into the toe, complete with adjustable nylon webbing. The pocket isn’t just for show — it doubles as a climbing chalk bag, made from a durable 40% recycled canvas. It also comes with a “Rucksock” made from 80% organic cotton which features a cargo pocket for an added McLaughlin touch.

“It’s key to have elements of functionality, mixed with a sense of conceptual art and style,” McLaughlin shares in a press release. “Creating pieces that can be multi-purpose but also fun has always been my goal. I was inspired by vintage hiking packs from the ’70s and the aesthetic of outdoor gear from that era for the collection.”

The Vans x Nicole McLaughlin Slip-On RS is available for purchase on McLaughlin’s website, Vans’ official site and on HBX.
