Rhea Raj Is Making Music For The IT Girls
In a new interview, Raj opens up about her latest single and remaining true to her roots.
In a new interview, South Asian musician Rhea Raj chats about her latest music video featuring Aliyah’s Interlude.
“Everyone deserves their main character moment and ‘Haute Couture’ is the soundtrack for it,” Raj told us. Her latest single, “HAUTE COUTURE (ft. Aliyah’s Interlude)” is not only a c-nty anthem every girlie needs to hear, but it’s also the perfect marriage of her roots and unique nature.
“Growing up, there was little to no representation for us brown girls in music and fashion, so I made ‘Haute Couture’ to be my unapologetic statement to the world that I am THAT GIRL. It’s about that moment when you walk into the club, fitted to the gods and everyone’s eyes are on you.”
In a recent interview for Field Notes, Hypebae’s latest advice column, she revealed honoring her heritage is essential. Her most recent music video, “PRAY ON IT” features lotus praying hands, another nod to her culture. “I love finding ways to share my Indian roots through my music and visuals whether through fashion, production, or choreography.”
“Everyone deserves their main character moment and ‘Haute Couture’ is the soundtrack for it!”
As for how she met Aliyah, aka creator of #Aliyahcore, it happened in the most Gen Z form: through TikTok. “Me and Aliyah met through TikTok,” she exclaimed. “I was a big fan of her #Aliyahcore videos which shattered so many barriers in the fashion world, and she loved my music video for ‘MESSY‘ which came out last year. There’s so much synergy between what we’re both doing as artists and when she told me she was coming to LA a few months ago, we instantly clicked as friends first. Then we made ‘Haute Couture’ and the rest is history!”
