Nike and Faith Kipyegon Are About To Make History

Teaming up to break the 4-minute mile challenge.

With marathon season already in full swing, Nike is kicking things up a notch with an exciting announcement. The sports label is teaming up with its brand athlete and middle and long-distance superstar, Faith Kipyegon, for a groundbreaking mission — to become the first woman to run a mile in under 4 minutes. And honestly, we’ve got no doubt she’ll make history.

The challenge, titled “Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile,” will see Kipyegon make her attempt to break the world record at Stade Charléty in Paris on June 26. Kipyegon has already proven she’s one of the best, but to set a new milestone, she’ll need to shave off at least seven and a half seconds from her current time. To do that, she’ll have to run each lap nearly two seconds faster than before — an incredible feat that will push her to the limits of human endurance.

“I’m a three-time Olympic champion. I’ve earned World Championship titles. Why not think outside the box?” shares Kipyegon in the press release. “I told myself, ‘If you believe in yourself, and your team believes in you, you can do it…I want this attempt to say to women, ‘You can dream and make your dreams valid.’ This is the way to go as women, to push boundaries and dream big.”

Elliott Hill, President & CEO of Nike, also shared the excitement, “Faith is a once-in-a-generation talent, and her goal is exactly what we stand for. Breaking 4 is the type of dream we’re committed to making a reality — helping both elite and everyday athletes believe anything is possible…With Faith, our teams are breaking barriers by blending advanced sport science with revolutionary footwear and apparel to help her achieve a truly historic goal.”
