"Virtual Beauty" Dissects How the Digital Age Is Redefining Our Self-Image

The exhibition is now open at the Somerset House.

In the digital era, our definition of beauty is constantly evolving. In an attempt to explore how beauty is intrinsically linked to technology, the Somerset House in London is putting on “Virtual Beauty” — an exhibition featuring artists Sin Wai Kin, Lil Miquela, Arvida Byström and more. Starting now, a series of sculptures, photos, installations and videos are on display — all of which aim to dissect the status quo of beauty.

“‘Virtual Beauty’ takes an in-depth look at the complex relationship between digital technologies and the aesthetics of beauty. The artists and designers included propose highly original and unexpected takes on the subject, asking us to reconsider how we see ourselves and each other both online and IRL,” Dr. Cliff Lauson, Director of Exhibitions at Somerset House said in a press release.

Among the many works, Somerset House Studios’ resident artist Sin Wai Kin explores drag, fantasy and identity with The Storyteller. Meanwhile, CGI influencer Lil Miquela serves as a true embodiment of digital culture — obscuring the line between human and artificial. In A Daughter Without A Mother, Arvida Byström investigates the role AI plays in beauty standards. The program also includes an exploration of facial identity with augmented reality by M.C. Abbott, María Buey González and Carl Olsson, a body sculpture made of silicone and LED screens by Filip Ćustić and many others.

Additionally, Virtual Beauty includes tours led by curators, talks with artists and a series of events examining beauty in the digital era.
