It's Not a Secret, All of Your Favorite Celebrities Wear Wigs
The internet suspects stars are passing off wigs as their natural hair, but beauty experts say it’s nothing new.
No matter where you find yourself on the internet, celebrities’ looks are being dissected. Whether its claims of cosmetic surgery or veneer shaming, TikTok users in particular never shy away from speaking their mind. Most recently, online creators have added a new hobby to their internet resume: wig investigating.
After fans began to speculate that Sabrina Carpenter‘s signature bouncy blonde blowout was a wig, the celebrity wig accusations grew even more widespread. Among the many offenders, Odessa A’zion‘s long curls became a hot subject of debate. While some commenters outright deny that A’zion’s hair could be a wig, others point out that stars have always worn wigs — but it’s only recently the internet has taken notice.

For Reagan Baker, hairstylist and founder of the House of Reagan Salon, stars passing off wigs as their natural hair is more of a well-known fact than an internet conspiracy. “Celebrities and other people in the spotlight have been wearing wigs for more than a thousand years,” she tells Hypebae. “Dolly Parton famously replied, ‘I don’t know honey, I’m never there,’ when asked if it takes a long time to do her hair.”
Although they’re not always easy to spot, wigs have remained an industry staple for everything from red carpet events to on-stage performances. For stars that attend these outings on the daily, a wig is often the only way to preserve the health of their natural hair. “Heavy styling everyday for stage or film can really take a toll on your hair’s integrity, and [wigs] are a great way to protect it while achieving the desired look,” Kimberly Gueldner, celebrity stylist at Voel Hair says.
For major pop stars like Sabrina Carpenter, hair is more than just an aesthetic choice — it’s a crucial part of her identity as an artist. Because of this, wigs ensure that she’s always delivering the same level of glamour that her fans have come to expect, no matter what the state of her natural hair is. “Sometimes it’s easier to throw on a wig to get a star-worthy look than it is to work with your own hair,” celebrity hairstylist and brand founder Nick Stenson says.

In 2025, it’s no shock that celebrity wigs are often undetectable to the untrained eye. For many stars, the inconspicuous nature of a wig is the very reason they choose to wear them. “Wigs have come a long way, and now [they] look very natural and realistic,” Stenson says. Today’s wigs are far more advanced than the internet might lead us to believe — especially since A-listers often have access to the highest quality hair pieces and the most skilled hairstylists. In fact, many hair professionals largely consider a good wig like Carpenter’s a symbol of major success.
As internet users discover their favorite stars wear wigs, hairstylists are hopeful that there will be a shift in our outdated views. “People still associate wigs with [being] ‘fake,’ or assume celebrities are naturally blessed with perfect hair 24/7.” Karen Mitchell, licensed cosmetologist and founder of True Hair Company says. “The truth is, wigs today are so advanced and well-installed that they’re meant to look undetectable. When something looks that good, people assume it must be real.”
