Mugler's First Handbag Campaign Stars a Nude Female Bodybuilder
Exploring themes of strength and sensuality.
Mugler is entering a new era of accessories. Under the creative direction of Miguel Castro Freitas, the House unveiled its first handbag campaign, introducing two sculptural leather pieces: Aurora and Lua.
Inspired by Mugler’s legacy of celebrating the body through bold, architectural design, the debut bags translate the brand’s signature codes into leather accessories. Leading the launch is the Aurora, named after Castro Freitas’ mother and the Latin word for “dawn.” The design reimagines a rare bag from Manfred Thierry Mugler’s Spring/Summer 2002 collection with a modern molded construction, raw-edge detailing and the designer’s signature metallic monolith hardware.
Joining it is the Lua, named after the Portuguese word for “moon.” Featuring a curved crescent silhouette, the style balances structure with soft, supple leather, arriving in both a classic shoulder bag and a larger city-ready version, set to be your new go-to.
To celebrate the launch, Mugler released a striking campaign photographed by Chris Lensz. Starring a female bodybuilder, the imagery explores themes of strength, sensuality and unconventional femininity, drawing inspiration from classical portraiture and 19th-century sculpture. The result is a visual statement that places the bags in conversation with the body itself, reinforcing Mugler’s long-standing commitment to redefining beauty through powerful design.
“For me, handbags are our most intimate objects. They become an extension of one’s body and carry memory with time,” shared Castro Freitas. With Aurora and Lua, the designer opens a new chapter for Mugler, proving the House’s architectural DNA extends far beyond the runway.
