The Los Angeles Lakers and TASCHEN Are Releasing the Perfect Coffee Table Book
79 seasons of NBA excellence in one sitting.
The Los Angeles Lakers have officially partnered with luxury art book publisher TASCHEN to unveil Lakers: An Official History of the Purple & Gold: the definitive, authorized hardcover history of the iconic NBA franchise.
Spanning nearly eight decades of hardwood dominance, Hollywood connections and culture-shifting moments, the 528-page coffee table book captures how the Lakers transformed Los Angeles into a global intersection of sports, style and entertainment. “The Lakers are a global phenomenon,” said Los Angeles Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss in a press release. “No other team has turned athletes into icons or left a legacy quite like the Lakers. Players, coaches and fans have made this franchise about so much more than a game — they’ve created an unforgettable show that has been playing for 79 seasons.”
Edited by Vikki Tobak, the book features a foreword by iconic player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and an afterword by former coach Phil Jackson. The visual tribute also blends rare, never-before-published archival photos with personal essays from franchise legends and celebrity courtside regulars, including LeBron James, Luka Dončić, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Jack Nicholson, Flea and Paula Abdul.
Divided across 10 distinct chapters, the retrospective chronicles the franchise’s journey from Minneapolis to the historic Showtime era, the legendary three-peat and the 2020 championship. Visual highlights include four-page gatefolds detailing all 17 championship rings, the evolution of the Lakers uniform, retired numbers, historic promotional materials and postgame analysis notes.
Lakers: An Official History of the Purple & Gold is available to purchase now via the TASCHEN and Los Angeles Lakers websites. A broader global release hits select retailers on October 1.
