Head Backstage at Birkenstock's Spring/Summer 2019 Presentation in Florence

Get a sneak preview of the styles to come.

To showcase its Spring/Summer 2019 collection during Pitti Uomo, Birkenstock took over Florence’s serene Giardino Torrigiani for a stunning runway presentation that both celebrated the brand’s heritage and timeless appeal and offered a glimpse into its future.

The grunge and metal-laden soundtrack was a stark contrast to the chic production and lush setting, but the perfect homage to recent collaborator, Rick Owens, who also outfitted the models.  Although the classic sandals have always been Birkenstock’s signature style, the brand has expanded even further for next season, adding variations of the silhouette into the mix. Suede boat shoes, slip-on lace-ups with the heel panels cut out and sneakers with a cork midsole were also spotted. For those who’re fans of the offbeat footwear that the fashion world is currently obsessed with, there were clunky, clog-esque pieces, reminiscent of Balenciaga’s fabulously ugly crocs.

Metallic tones have proved popular for Birkenstock this season, and it looks like they’ll be unveiling further shiny offerings in 2019, too. If limited-edition collaborations are more your style, the brand has confirmed it has exciting partnerships in the pipeline, alongside another partnership with Rick Owens. Take a look at our exclusive backstage images in the gallery above to get a preview of what’s to come next season and for more Birkenstock updates, check out these rainbow-hued Arizona sandals.
