Hedi Slimane Officially Takes the Reign at Celine With His Debut SS19 Collection
The creative director stayed true to his design ethos.
Phoebe Philo‘s reign at Celine is officially over. Hedi Slimane has stepped onto his pedestal, and claimed the French fashion house as his own with his debut Spring/Summer 2019 collection. After minor details surrounding his debut were shared via an interview that went live days before the show, the 96-look showcase was held in Paris, focusing heavily on his luxe interpretation of partywear.
Slimane took this momentous occasion and decided to flip the nail on its head. Where Philo was praised for creating stylish separates women viewed as essentials, he served up a rockstar influenced, range. Through and through his hands were all over the SS19 collection. This was evident in the black color palette, his take on leatherwear and the countless separates featuring sequins. A particular look which caught our attention featured an oversized, polka-dot dress worn with a pillbox hat and strappy, black boots.
Menswear was also prevalent during the presentation. Looks included feature suiting outfitted by leather pieces like trousers and tops. The men’s looks were indefinitely reminiscent of Slimane’s designs during his influential period at Saint Laurent as creative director.
In total, the presentation was an awakening of some sort and pinpointed Slimane’s entrance into the fashion house. Below, take a look at the public’s reactions.
I’m gathering all my coins and going to purchase as much #oldceline as possible. #phoebephilo created masterpieces. The new direction of #Celine is not for me.

Quintessential Hedi Slimane. All black, skinny silhouettes, odes to Parisian couture and the L.A. rock scene—

That #Celine show was OFFENSIVE. It was the antithesis of Phoebe’s vision for the house. I’m not opposed to change; Phoebe had her time. But when that change comes in the form of whitewashing, pre-pubescent looking girls and appallingly lazy design literally BYE
