Versace Is Suing Fashion Nova for Copying Its Designs
Including Jennifer Lopez’s iconic 2000 Grammys dress.
Having previously been accused of copying the designs of well-known brands, Fashion Nova is being sued by Versace for selling “deliberate copies and imitations of [its] most famous and recognizable designs, marks, symbols and other protected elements.” According to documents obtained by The Fashion Law, the Italian luxury fashion house filed its case against the fast-fashion brand early this week saying:
“Fashion Nova’s ability to churn out new clothing so quickly is due in large part to its willingness to copy the copyrighted designs, trademarks and trade dress elements of well-known designers, and trade on their creative efforts in order to bolster [its own] bottom line.”
From Jennifer Lopez’s iconic 2000 Grammy Awards look that made a comeback this year at Milan Fashion Week to its famed black and gold Barocco print, the case claims that Fashion Nova has managed to “exploit the popularity and renown of Versace’s signature designs,” making a profit by infringing trademark laws. The lawsuit also states that “in blatant disregard of [its] rights,” Fashion Nova has “manufactured, marketed and sold apparel using the same or substantially similar copyrighted designs and confusingly similar trademarks and trade dress.”
Despite Versace officially informing Fashion Nova of its “infringing activities” committed on July 26, September 20, October 1 and November 13 this year, the Milan-based label claims that it still continued to copy its designs, giving it no choice but to sue.
