Chanel Takes Its First Steps Toward Inclusion by Hiring New Head of Diversity

A new role for the luxury house.

After undergoing major recent changes such as the passing of designer Karl Lagerfeld earlier this year, Chanel is now taking its first steps to become a more diverse company by recently hiring a Head of Diversity & Inclusion. This position is a new role for the house, which was previously handled by the People & Organization department. According to Business of Fashion, Fiona Pargeter, who was Head of Diversity & Inclusion at Swiss Bank UBS in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, will be taking on the new job.

A number of other luxury fashion houses have gone through similar changes after receiving backlash regarding the same topic. Dolce & Gabbana had to cancel its fashion show in Shanghai following a campaign video showing a Chinese model eating Italian pasta with chopsticks, along with racist comments on social media by designer Stefano Gabbana. Prada had to withdraw keychains from its stores after facing blackface controversy. Gucci made an announcement in March that it would undergo changes to become a more diverse company, following criticism due to a black turtleneck sweater.
