The Pandemic Could Cause a Streetwear Shortage in the UK
Retailers are struggling to meet the demand for sweatpants and sneakers.
The United Kingdom could face a streetwear shortage as shoppers continue to focus their spending on quarantine-appropriate fashion such as loungewear and sneakers.
According to a report by The Guardian, suppliers and retailers are struggling to keep up with the demand for casual clothing. In fact, stores have had trouble securing stock in time for the winter season due to COVID-related factory closures in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Fashion analysis firm Edited shared statistics revealing that the number of sportswear items sold out online over the past month had increased by 17% compared with last year. If the UK experiences a second wave of the novel coronavirus and consequent lockdown, that percentage is expected to rise.
Popular online retailer ASOS also shared that it has less stock than usual due to a shortage of sports shoes, sweatpants and hoodies. Chief Executive Nick Beighton said he doesn’t expect supply to go back to normal until the spring.
