Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Opens Up About Experience With Sexual Assault
The representative said she is a survivor of assault during an Instagram Live discussion of the Capitol riots.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez disclosed that she is a survivor of sexual assault during an Instagram Live appearance in which she detailed her experiences during last month’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. “I’m a survivor of sexual assault,” the representative said. “I haven’t told many people that in my life. But when we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez recounted the frightening events that unfolded during the Capitol riots, including hiding in a bathroom as her office was broken into. “Where is she?” she recalled an angry voice demanding. The politician said she feared for her life: “I felt that if this was the journey that my life was taking…that, you know, I had fulfilled my purpose.” She responded to those telling her to move on from the insurrection, adding that those critics are “using the same tactics of every other abuser who just tells you to move on.”
