6 Dr. Seuss Books With Racist Imagery Will No Longer Be Published

The children’s author has a long history of dehumanizing people of color in his work.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises has announced that it will cease publication of six books by the famed author that include racist imagery. The children’s illustrator and writer has long been scrutinized for dehumanizing Black, Indigenous, Jewish, Asian and Muslim people in his work. As documented in an Instagram post by educational platform The Conscious Kid, his previous work includes the use of racial slurs and depictions of Black characters that harken to minstrel shows. In 2018, a museum dedicated to Dr. Seuss removed a mural that featured one of the writer’s illustrations picturing a Chinese man as a stereotyped caricature.

The six Dr. Seuss books to be pulled from publication are If I Ran the Zoo, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super! and The Cat’s Quizzer. “These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises told The Associated Press. “Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families” it added.
