Acne Studios Dreams of Post-Pandemic Fashion for Fall/Winter 2021
“I was thinking about what happens when we emerge from isolation, the same but also somehow different.”
For the Fall/Winter 2021 season, Swedish label Acne Studios reflected over the past year in isolation to reflect how we will finally dress and feel once the pandemic is behind us.
“I was thinking about what happens when we emerge from isolation, the same but also somehow different. This collection is a dreamscape that begins with soft pastel colours, before awakening into monochromatic clarity, which is an ode to the white or black clothes worn for rituals in our life cycle, like weddings and funerals,” said creative director Jonny Johansson, referring to the collection which begins with soft and bright pieces, and transitions into something more uniform-inspired and filled with contrasts.
The collection sees voluminous silhouettes as well as reoccurring draping elements throughout, playing with panelling as well as shape. Some garments feature accented and cinched waists, whereas some are loose and shapeless. We’re also seeing knits and cardigans with ragged hems, as well as leather trench coats and jackets with brushed seams, creating a denim-inspired aesthetic which nods back to Acne Studios’ beginnings as a denim label.
In terms of color, the range transitions from floral pastels and neutrals into monochromatic looks in black-and-white, almost transitioning from dreams into reality. The contrast between the sweet and elegant and the tough and structured silhouettes is apparent, and captures Acne Studios’ versatility when it comes to design. It feels authentic and real, with hand-bleached materials and frayed hems appearing as a common thread.
As for accessories, artist Apollinaria Broche has created ceramic animals that are carried like bags, “as if an imaginary friend from childhood.” Smaller versions of the pieces also appear as chokers and earrings, and new collapsible suede bags are featured in geometric shapes. Lastly, for the footwear we’re seeing clogs in cowhide, leather boots – both thigh-high and ankle-height, as well as leather pumps and strappy sandals.
