Demonstrations in Solidarity With Palestine Take Place Globally
Thousands have gathered across the UK, Los Angeles, New York and more in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
Demanding an end to Israeli airstrikes that have killed at least 200 civilians – more than 60 of whom are children – thousands of people gathered worldwide over the weekend in support of Palestinians in Gaza City.
For those unfamiliar with the violence that is happening in Jerusalem, the issue has been going on for decades, dating back to the end of WW1 when tensions between the Jewish and Arab communities continued to rise. Most recently, the situation has escalated at the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan in mid-April. The ongoing situation between Israelis and Palestinians has led the United Nations to warn of a “full-scale war.”
Showing support for Palestinians, several thousand people gathered on the streets of London, Sydney, Paris and more to chant “free, free Palestine,” NBC News reports. “This is not just a Palestinian issue; it’s a human rights issue… This is a humanitarian thing, and as Americans, we do have a duty to speak up about this because our own tax dollars are funding the Israeli military,” a participating student in Louisville, Kentucky shared with USA Today. According to CNN, some of the bigger demonstrations in the U.S. took place in regions like Philadelphia, New York and Dallas.
