These Are 5 Common Hair Washing Mistakes You Might Be Making

Yes, you may have been lathering, rinsing and repeating all wrong.

3.0K

Growing up, I believed that washing your hair was simple. All you needed was a good shampoo, maybe conditioner if your hair type could stand it, and then you’d be done — and boy, was I wrong.

Little did I know there was a way to wash your hair incorrectly. A practice so poorly that it can end up doing more harm than good for your hair. You may have made many unconscious mistakes that ultimately lead to scalp infections, breakage and dehydration. However, please don’t be discouraged, washing your hair isn’t as complicated, but there’s always a way to improve your current habits. No worries at all, as we have covered the top tips and tricks you need to incorporate into your hair-washing routine for healthy locks. Keep reading on for more.

Do: Refrain from switching hair products too often.

To keep the integrity and health of your hair, it’s best to stick to the same products in your current hair routine. There is no need to switch out products haphazardly, opening your scalp to more strain and stress. Haircare brands will market that new drops will do so much more for you, but as older people say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Don’t: Wash your hair in hot water.

The best advice here is to use lukewarm water, which is safe for your hair. Hot temperatures expose your hair cuticles and can damage your tresses and weaken the roots, causing sensitivity.

Do: Use conditioner first.

TikTok taught us that introducing the “reverse hair wash” method to your routine is healthy for your locks. Conditioner is heavier and weighs the hair down. Using shampoo afterward adds more hydration to your hair, but it also depends on your current state and texture.

Don’t: Over shampoo.

Some people wash their hair every day. You don’t have to shampoo your hair daily to keep it clean. Shampoo has traces of sulfates and can strip the hair of its natural oils.

Don’t: Towel dry your hair.

Television and movies lied. Towel drying your hair causes fragile and frizzy hair. If you have to have something on your head, try using an old t-shirt and gently dab your tresses. Towels absorb heat from your hair and make it all brittle and dry.
