"Little Jewels" by Jesse Edwards Brings Back Disney Nostalgia
Coming to London-based gallery OMNI on November 22.
London-based gallery OMNI has announced a new ceramics and paintings exhibition by artist Jesse Edwards. Dubbed, “Little Jewels,” the occasion represents Edward’s first solo exhibition in the U.K. Opening November 22, the space will showcase a series of sculptured cinematic scenes vital to the New York-based artist’s creative practice. “Little Jewels” blends Edward’s graffiti counterculture of his youth with his precisely rendered still-life paintings and ceramic sculptures.
The series of television sets examine the myth of the American Dream and popular culture through an uncanny insight into modern life. Stills of movies like Fantasia, Snow White, and Peter Pan take over ceramic replicas of ’80s sharp television sets. Edwards creates Disney animations employing 17th-century Dutch glazing techniques to evoke feelings of childhood nostalgia and explore themes of innocence, idealism, horror, and villainy, recurrent in traditional Disney symbolism. The exhibition also welcomes some of the artist’s signature still life oil paintings and a series of discarded palettes used during his painting process, which he reframes as beautiful abstract artworks.
