As Anne Hathaway confirmed back in 2019, a third Princess Diaries movie is currently in the works at Disney.

Deadline reports that the upcoming film will be a continuation of the stories of the first and second installments, rather than a reboot. Debra Martin Chase will be returning as the producer for the movie while Melissa K. Stack will join as the executive producer.

As of writing, it’s unknown whether Hathaway or Julie Andrews will be reprising their roles as Mia Thermopolis or Queen Clarisse Renaldi. However, the Devil Wears Prada star expressed interest in starring in the film as recently as a month ago. “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” she told Entertainment Tonight in late October.

Back in 2019, Hathaway shared on Bravo‘s Watch What Happens Live: “There is a script. I want to do it, Julie wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase our producer wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just, we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it.”

The Princess Diaries, based on a novel series of the same title, follows Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary teenager in San Francisco who finds out that she’s actually a real-life princess as the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. The first installment was released in 2001 followed by the prequel in 2004.

Stay tuned as we learn more about The Princess Diaries 3.
