Kim Kardashian on Not Initially Understanding the Concept Behind Her 2021 Met Gala Look
“At first, I didn’t get it,” she says about the masked Balenciaga fit.
When Kim Kardashian stepped out wearing a fully-covered Balenciaga number at the 2021 Met Gala, many had mixed feelings. It turns out, she did, too, at first.
The KKW Beauty founder reflected on not totally understanding the concept behind having her face fully covered. However, thanks to Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, she changed her mind.
“When he told me about the idea, I could tell he was trying to ease me into it,” she told Vogue in a new interview. “At first, I didn’t get it. I can’t go to the Met and cover my face; what is my glam team going to do? But I trust Demna 100 percent. You have to have that trust so that even when you’re taking a big risk, you know it’ll be worth it.”
The theme for last year’s Met Gala was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which is what led Kardashian to stick with the veiled look. “I fought against it,” she previously told the outlet for her recent cover story. “I was like, ‘I don’t know how I could wear the mask. Why would I want to cover my face?’ But Demna and the [Balenciaga] team were like, This is a costume gala. This is not a Vanity Fair party where everyone looks beautiful. There’s a theme and you have to wear the mask. That is the look.”
