Ancuta Sarca Harmonizes Technology and Nature in Her FW23 Presentation

Retro-futuristic silhouettes inspired by AI’s ability to generate the impossible.

Ground-breaking footwear and accessories designer Ancuta Sarca presented her Fall/Winter 2023 collection as part of the London Fashion Week’s NEWGEN schedule. This season, the Romanian designer, Fashion East alumni and 2022 ANDAM Fashion Awards finalist continued to bridge juxtapositions through her signature up-cycled staples — this time, launching bags made from boxing gloves and denim vests.

Inspired by seminal movies such as Ex Machina and The Skin I Live In, Sarca translated the world’s obsession with AI and its ability to generate the impossible through retro-futuristic silhouettes. But of course, the collection wouldn’t be completed without the designer’s homage to her hometown of Negrești-Oaș and its surroundings of woodlands, forests and snow-covered hills — demonstrating that technology wouldn’t exist without the organic.

Furthermore, Ancuta Sarca celebrated the splendor and beauty of nature by repurposing the discarded — picture vintage quilted nylon jackets on boots and pointed-toe heels adorned with end-of-roll faux furs. There were also square-toe loafers and booties made of deadstock leather. For the first time, backless pumps and clogs featured repurposed and deadstock denim jackets, which introduced the label’s new creative partnership with Lee.

Take a look at Ancuta Sarca’s FW23 presentation at the Old Selfridges Hotel in the gallery above.
