Is Sex-Positive Feminism Desensitizing Gen Z?
If not, then where TF did our sex lives go?
As sex positivity continues to lead the fourth wave of feminism, Gen Z remains on its celibacy kick. So much so, the sex recession is still in motion. But who’s to blame?
The College Heights Herald published an article questioning the same sentiments. How can we go from hyping up others and their sex lives, to absolutely no mention of active sexuality? According to Debra Murray, the publication’s editor-in-chief, there are several potential reasons — and sex and dating experts agree.
“For Gen Z… they’ve been inundated with sex from the moment that they started looking at YouTube videos when they were six and getting onto TikTok like all they have is sex coming at them from everywhere,” says Robin Marty, author of “A Handbook for Post-Roe America.” “It almost is some sort of a desensitizing thing where it no longer holds any sort of mystery.”
However, as Marty states, it’s impossible to ignore the other major life-changing events Gen Z has endured from the pandemic which Murray acknowledges created a “bubble” around dating lives. Then, of course, there’s the overturning of Roe v. Wade which absolutely demolished any sense of empowering, sexual freedom that Gen Z would’ve liked to explore.
So although sex positivity has empowered Gen Z to make their own decisions regarding their sex lives, it doesn’t change the fact that they’re living during a horrible historical period for sexual freedom. And what an effective method for drying our metaphorical p-ssies up.
