UPDATE: Here's When 'The Idol' Is Premiering at Cannes Film Festival
It’s sooner than you think.
The Weeknd‘s upcoming HBO series, The Idol, is officially making its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 16 to May 27.
The forthcoming show was speculated to premiere at the festival thanks to rumors on social media, however, it’s since been confirmed by Thierry Frémaux, the festival’s director, after a press conference announcing the screening line-up was hosted in Paris on April 13. It won’t be the first time that a TV series will premiere at the event, as The Idol will follow the likes of Twin Peaks: The Return and Top of the Lake: China Doll.
So far, the series has attracted global attention, as it’s set to star The Weekend, Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan and BLACKPINK member Jennie. Additional characters and cameos were recently teased too, including the likes of Dan Levy, Hank Azaria and Moses Sumney. Various stars have also spoken out about working on the series, including Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp.
According to the Cannes website, the series synopsis reads: “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”
The Idol will premiere at Cannes Film Festival on May 22 at 9.30 BST / 4.30 EST, with its official release date confirmed to be June 4.
