Yayoi Kusama's "Dots Obsession" Universe Comes to Life at WNDR Museum
Starting on May 12.
Yayoi Kusama, the world-renowned Japanese artist, is set to unveil a new installation at the WNDR Museum in Chicago. The three-story infinity room, named “Dots Obsession,” is a stunning all-yellow walk-in exhibit featuring Kusama’s signature polka dots that swirl around the room and stretch across the museum walls. This is a return of the installation which toured around the world and was last on view in 2018.
For Kusama, the polka dot is a powerful symbol, representing a single particle among billions. As she explains in a statement, “Since my childhood, I have always made works with polka dots. Earth, moon, sun and human beings all represent dots.”
In addition, Kusama’s “Let’s Survive Forever (2017)” piece, which is currently on display in Chicago, will be moving to WNDR’s new space in Boston after the current show ends on April 30. David Allen, the museum’s Creative Director, shared in the exhibition notes that they are committed to bringing Kusama’s art to the public and disrupting the exclusive and distant experience that often accompanies art exhibitions.
