Kylie Jenner Transforms Into a Cyber Mermaid for Jean Paul Gaultier SS23

Give Florence Tétier her “Flowers.”

Jean Paul Gaultier just unveiled its Spring/Summer 2023 collection campaign, dubbed “Flowers” and starring Kylie Jenner.

Captured through the distinctive vision of photographer Elizaveta Porodina, the campaign sees Jenner transform into a Web 2.0 mermaid, fusing the aquatic aesthetic of Creative Director Florence Tétier with a futuristic, virtual reality- universe.

“For this collection, working with Kylie Jenner was an obvious choice,” explains Tétier in a press release. “Her personality and notoriety make her a true source of inspiration. She ideally matches the representation of a modern mermaid that I was looking for: a powerful being capable of adapting to their environment,” she continues.

“Pairing Elizaveta Porodina and her eerie visual universe with Kylie Jenner mirrored the marriage of my vision of ‘augmented’ nature with the floral references taken from the Maison’s archives. Jean Paul Gaultier’s universe has always featured extraordinary yet wildly popular figures, and Kylie Jenner is a great and logical addition to this lineage of talent.”

Alongside drawing from virtual visuals as inspiration, the collection itself also harks back to the early 2000s, when JPG’s collections were “strewn with flowers,” nodding to past collections like “Louise Brooks Chez Easy Rider,” which saw the designer utilizing scarves and flower patterns to create “inside-out” garments, geometric flower prints and deconstructed silhouettes. Elsewhere, sailor characters and punk party animals serve as inspiration, offering contemporary takes on the designer’s past mesh miniskirts, flower dresses and floral scarves.

Acting as an evolution of the designer’s signature floral motifs, SS23 sees the Maison teaming up with artist Jean-Vincent Simonet to create a new “liquid” print dubbed “Fleurs Liquides.” The new iteration adorns dresses, tube pants and mélange tops, and arrives mixed with the Maison’s “morphing” motif from its 1996 “Cyberbaba” collection — featuring across stretch tulle dresses, tops, swimsuits and beach-appropriate knitted dresses.

The collection also nods to the brand’s lingerie expertise, reinventing Madonna‘s conical corsets and stretch satin cycling shorts, merging lingerie-style lacings and seams with sleeves and pants, elevating the likes of low-rise jeans and leisurewear.
