Ashish and Linder Celebrate the Bodacious Women of Bollywood
With a selection of new prints, titled ‘Three Goddesses of the Silver Screen.’
Ashish has teamed up with artist Linder to create a new selection of prints for House of Voltaire, paying tribute to the iconic Bollywood film stars of the ’80s and ’90s.
Titled Three Goddesses of the Silver Screen, the selection of prints utilize Ashish’s signature, high-octane color palette and use of sequins, merging and layering a multitude of art and design mediums. Featuring Indian film stars Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi and Meena Kumari, the prints aim to pay tribute to their tenacity and rule-breaking nature.
“Growing up in India in the ’80s and ’90s, there weren’t a lot of icons for the queer community, which in itself wasn’t very visible – but perhaps we instinctively recognised a little of ourselves in these defiant, glamorous women who fought for recognition and happiness, despite the odds,” Ashish explains in a press release.
Drawing inspiration from the era-defining aesthetic of 1960s fashion and lifestyle magazines, the prints depict the duality of the film industry, whereby the glossy portraits of these powerful women were tinged with sadness based on what was going on behind the scenes. As a result, Ashish’s portraits aim to represent the women as heroic, revolutionary figures drenched in bold and joyful color, as opposed to “tragic victims” of the time.
The prints will be available for purchase as individual images or a complete triptych via Studio Voltaire.
