Here’s What Derms Really Think about Hair Gloss Treatments
Plus, our top recommendations for the trending alternative to damaging hair dye.
If you’d look at my inbox today, you’d see a million pitches for gloss. In recent months, the hair care product has surged in popularity, capturing the attention of beauty enthusiasts and brands alike. Your TikTok feed probably has one or two dermatologists recommending the easy treatment. Once a salon-only appointment, hair gloss has become a must-have for anyone looking to elevate their haircare game at home. With its ability to enhance shine, increase color payoff and improve texture, it’s no wonder its making waves in the beauty world.
Hair gloss is considered healthier than traditional hair dye because it does not penetrate the hair cuticle as deeply as dye does, according to MD, FAAD and Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick. “Traditional dye works by opening up the hair shaft to deposit color. Hair gloss, on the other hand, usually coats the outer layer of the hair, smoothing and adding shine without causing structural damage. It typically contains less ammonia or harsh chemicals, making it gentler on the hair,” she adds.
Essentially, hair gloss adds a layer of shine and enhances the hair’s natural color or adds subtle toning. It works by smoothing the hair cuticle, which helps to reflect light and create a glossy appearance. Depending on the formula, glosses can enhance vibrancy, or neutralize unwanted tones.
“As a medical aesthetician, I’m basically a skin detective—helping my clients sift through a sea of serums, potions and mysterious skin irritants,” says Audrey Matn, Licensed Medical Aesthetician and CEO of 123 Beauty Lab. “It’s a lot— one wrong ingredient, and boom, you’ve got irritation, rash and, in the case of dyes, even hair loss. Repeatedly using the wrong products can turn your scalp against you. Permanent dyes are full of ammonia and abrasive chemicals, and can cause contact dermatitis and all sorts of chaos. Hair glosses, on the other hand, are skin friendly: they’re ammonia-free, gentle and way more compatible with sensitive skin.”
So what can you expect when you use hair gloss? Typically smoother, shinier hair with a more vibrant, polished appearance. “If the gloss includes color, it can refresh faded color or add subtle tonal adjustments. Results typically last for about four to six weeks. Since gloss doesn’t permanently alter your hair’s structure, it washes out gradually, leaving your hair in a healthier state compared to frequent dyeing,” explains Garshick.
One of hair gloss’s most appealing aspects is its versatility. Whether you want to enhance your natural shade, neutralize unwanted tones or simply add a touch of shine, anyone can enhance their natural hair color with gloss. It’s a one-size-fits-all solution for anyone looking to experiment with their hair color (including newbies), even if they’re a bit nervous about a permanent change. And who doesn’t love the ability to achieve a temporary change without the commitment – or damage?
