Tembe Denton-Hurst's Latest Book Celebrates the Rich History of Nail Art

“It’s an art object that celebrates who’s doing interesting things and showcases how rooted nail art has been in Black and brown communities in America.”

Writer and author of the best-selling Homebodies, Tembe Denton-Hurst, is set to release her second book, Fresh Sets: Contemporary Nail Art from Around the World, a collection of interviews with 35 different nail artists from big cities like London, New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Fresh Sets: Contemporary Nail Art from Around the World starts with an introduction to the history of nail art and a glossary that outlines techniques and terms utilized in the world of nail art, then dives deep into each artist. In each profile, she speaks to each nail tech about the inspiration behind their art, their aesthetic and more.

“Fresh Sets is a snapshot of nail culture as it is right now and the big evolution and shift we’ve seen with some of the technological innovations – beginning with what started in Japan in the early 2000s and the impact it has made in the U.S., Denton-Hurst said in a press statement. “It’s an art object that celebrates who’s doing interesting things and showcases how rooted nail art has been in black and brown communities in America.”

The book includes the work of nail artists Tomoya NakagawaKro VargasNails by Kumi323CHERRY, and others.

Fresh Sets: Contemporary Nail Art from Around the World by Tembe Denton Hurst will retail for $30 USD and be available on April 8. You can pre-order the book on Amazon and at other retailers here.
