Cannes Film Festival Announces Nudity Ban on the Red Carpet

Along with banning “voluminous dresses” with large trains to avoid overcomplicating seating and flow.

Cannes Film Festival just announced it’s banning nudity on the red carpet this year, which has sent fashion fans into a bit of a frenzy. The festival, whilst focused on premiering upcoming films, has become pretty known for its fashion moments over the years, particularly (given the time of year) extravagant sheer and embroidered gowns.

According to the official festival document, “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.” These new rules have come into effect as of 2025 and were included in a new “festival-goers charter” document.

The rules state that a “little black dress” or “cocktail dress” will be permitted, along with “a dark-coloured pant suit, a dressy top with black pants; elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel.” However, along with banning nudity, the festival has also prohibited “voluminous dresses” with large trains. This is due to the fact that these large gowns “hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating.”

As a result, it’ll be interesting to see how celebrities adhere to the new dress code…

Until then, see above for a reminder of Bella Hadid‘s showstopping sheer look from 2024.
