Emily Bader Is Playing Mia Hamm in a Movie About the 1999 Women's World Cup
Casting doesn’t get more perfect than this.
Following breakout roles in My Lady Jane and People We Meet on Vacation, Emily Bader is set to play U.S. Women’s National Team icon Mia Hamm in an upcoming movie about the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The 99’ers is based on the book The Girls of Summer: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and How It Changed the World by Jeré Longman. Arriving on Netflix in the near future, Bader’s casting is one of the first announcements for the film, and what a perfect casting it is.
The 1999 Women’s World Cup is one of the most iconic and memorable moments in USWNT history, characterized by a golden generation of American stars and a dramatic penalty shootout against China to clinch the title for the United States. Hamm played a pivotal role in the team’s ’90s success and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever grace the game. Though portraying a legend like Hamm is a big ask, Bader is more than up to the task.
For a film following a star-studded team, it’s only right the masterminds behind it are just as decorated. The 99’ers will be directed by Emmy Award winner Nicole Kassell, known for Netflix’s Sirens and HBO’s Watchmen.
This is only the first casting announcement, but more are to be expected as the year goes on for key players like Brandi Chastain and Briana Scurry. There isn’t an official release date yet, but the movie is set to land on Netflix before the end of the year.
