IGBO-SISUN Reclaims Everyday Power With "The Seat of Sovereignty"
The CFDA-approved label explores African history, ancestral ties and femininity in a new collection.
IGBO-SISUN, the emerging New York City label founded by designer Moses Aina, is translating African history, culture and aesthetics into everyday luxury with its new ready-to-wear collection, “The Seat of Sovereignty.”
IGBO-SISUN — a playful nod to Aina’s name that translates to “burning bush” in Yoruba – has built momentum over the years, showcasing designs at the Brooklyn Museum, earning MoMA commissions and debuting on the official CFDA NYFW calendar earlier this year. Now, Aina channels ancestral strength directly into wearable staples.
The collection draws inspiration from Queen Nzinga of Angola, who, in 1622, famously overturned a Portuguese governor’s attempt to diminish her power by having her attendants form a human throne so she could negotiate at eye level. “In a world where Black women are oftentimes sidelined, overlooked and denied a seat at the table, Queen Nzinga’s story is a reminder to us to build our own platform.” Aina explains in a press release.
Translating this history into modern garments, the collection reimagines the braided hair motif from the brand’s bespoke “ASCENSION” gown into swirling, graphic prints on ready-to-wear silhouettes. Rich shades of purple reflect the theme of royalty and power, and soft neutral tones take center stage across tailored coordinates, sleek mini dresses tees, and relaxed trousers. The recurring hair motifs nod to the crown as an enduring emblem of power and Black identity.
“The Seat of Sovereignty” is available for pre-order now on the IGBO-SISUN website.
