Are Eye Patches Performative?
TikTok has a lot to say about the skincare staple.
Eye patches have become a formative part of our beauty routines, with cult-favorite brands like Topicals, Rhode and Dieux all releasing their own versions. Because of this, it’s more common than ever to spot them in the wild.
Whether it’s trips to the coffee shop, the gym, or the grocery store, you’re bound to run into beauty fans rocking eye masks. However, in true TikTok fashion, users have started to further dissect the skincare staple — claiming that wearing them in public is purely performative, rather than the result of a strict skincare regimen.

Unlike traditional sheet masks which require acute attention, the on-the-go and undetectable nature of eye patches have turned them into the quintessential symbol of cool girl skincare. While traditional routines can seem intimidating and almost medical, a Rhode-branded eye mask is chic and fun — rendering it just as much of an accessory as a tool.
While the popularity of eye patches is undeniable, the criticism is slowly becoming more prominent online. Although some TikTokers maintain that they’re only meant to be worn at home, others claim that they’re altogether ineffective — furthering the idea that they’re only worn for performative reasons.

On the other side of the debate, a handful of skincare lovers swear by eye patches because of their ability to reduce puffiness, fade fine lines and prep the skin for makeup. Depending on your brand or ingredients of choice, the masks can target a wide range of skin concerns, making them an easy way to refresh your skin while running errands.
Are eye patches a revolutionary skincare must-have or just expensive stickers for your face? It depends on who you ask. Like most skincare trends, there are people on both ends of the spectrum. However, one thing’s for sure, in the era of effortless beauty, sometimes the coolest thing you can do is to put your effort on display.
