Bed Head Says There's No Excuse for Skipping Heat Protection

The brand just released its new heat defense line.

Hair care brand Bed Head has just unveiled its innovative new heat defense range, which aims to shield damaged hair while simultaneously boosting shine. In an attempt to emphasize how essential heat protection truly is, the brand hopes the launch will eliminate all of the possible excuses for skipping the vital step.

Among the new additions, the brand is introducing A Glass Act and No Fry Zone — two products that promise to not only defend against heat, frizz, sun and UV damage, but also maintain color vibrancy, shine, smoothness and texture.

“Bed Head has always been known for high-performance styling with bold fragrances and personality — these new products keep that energy, [while focusing] on prevention rather than cure,” the brand tells Hypebae. “Beyond heat protection, each product brings added secondary and tertiary benefits, like smoothness, glass-like shine and creating long-lasting styles.”

Ahead, we speak to Bed Head’s creative director Philip Downing about how necessary heat protection is and the process of dreaming up the new range.

On the Inspiration Behind the Line

We wanted to bolster our heat defense range with new products that removed any excuse, or reason, for not protecting your hair. That was really the starting point — developing heat defense support that works across all hair types and different kinds of styling routines, with formulas that slot easily into whatever your day-to-day styling already looks like.

The two new products: A Glass Act and No Fry Zone both offer heat protection for dry styling, and deliver on that bold, expressive impact that defines Bed Head products, but with distinctive efficacies — one is a mist and one is an oil-based formula.

On the Importance of Protecting Your Hair From Heat

Heat protectant for hair is essential. Particularly because with heat damage, you don’t often see the effects straight away, as the impact can be more gradual and prolonged. Without protection in place, the damage can creep up on you. Regular use of heat tools like straighteners and curling tools can cause split ends, breakage and even colour fade — meaning your salon-fresh investment and finish won’t last as long. That’s why heat protectant isn’t just important for wet or damp hair; you need it on dry hair too — so it can form your protective barrier. Think of it a bit like an insurance policy for your hair.

On Creating the New Products

My role focuses heavily on product creation and testing, so I worked closely with our research and development team to gather research and real-life insights from our audience to find out what they do and don’t enjoy when it comes to heat protection and identify where the gaps are.

What we found is that traditionally, heat protection has focused on working with wet hair only. But, styling habits have shifted a lot in recent years and there’s a move towards fewer wash days, with more restyling in-between washes. This means there is a growing need for protection on dry hair that works without the sizzle, to align with how people are actually styling their hair day-to-day — and the new products offer exactly that. We tested multiple prototypes across a range of hair types to land on products that perform effectively at different stages of routines.

On What the Launch Means for the Brand

There’s a brand-first in this range — A Glass Act is our first-ever oil, so it delivers the shine and nourishment you’d expect from an oil, but with so much more reparative benefits. The decision to make this innovation involved closely listening to what our audience wanted, and it was clear they wanted an oil base with as many benefits as possible, which is why we then spent years perfecting this format, landing on something that offers a combination of heat and UV defense.

To me, heat defense has always felt a bit too functional and sterile, so we wanted to liven it up, make it feel edgier and show how damage can build up over weeks and months if you’re not protecting your hair.

A Glass Act and No Fry Zone retail for $13 USD each, both are now available for purchase.
