Meet the Bixie: The Cooler, Younger Sister of the Pixie Haircut

The hybrid hairstyle is currently all the rage.

On the red carpet and our TikTok feeds, short hair is everywhere. Just in time for the warm weather, everyone is trading in their long locks for shorter, more manageable hairstyles. After Zendaya debuted an ear-length cut her hairstylist is calling a “bixie,” the look has become a hot topic of discussion among beauty fans.

But, what exactly is a bixie? Similarly to other trendy hairstyles like the lob, or long bob — a bixie is a fresh take on hairstyles you’re already familiar with. “A bixie is a cross between a bob and a pixie. It’s a longer, shaggier version of the classic pixie,” celebrity hairstylist Cody Renegar tells Hypebae. “It uses choppy layers for a textured style that’s softer and less blunt than the pixie.”

While the pixie haircut remains a popular choice, the bixie is inevitably following in its footsteps, since it can easily be boiled down to a grown out pixie. On the other hand, the longer nature of a bixie also makes it a less intimidating way to break into shorter hair. “The bixie is so viral because it’s the entry way into a short haircut. It keeps length around the face, easier to grow out and it has a luxury feel to it. It’s perfect for the client who is scared of short hair,” hairstylist Brendnetta Ashley says. However, beauty experts aren’t convinced that the current bixie wave will overtake the classic pixie cut.

For Renegar, the popularity of the cut can also be attributed to Gen Z’s affinity for nostalgic beauty trends. “I think the bixie is popular right now because ’90s trends are back. It’s definitely a style that’s going to stick around for a while because of it’s versatility and low maintenance, but nothing is ever going to replace the iconic pixie that has been around for decades,” he says.

In the case of Zendaya’s new cut, her hairstylist Ursula Stephen says that it’s the ideal way to cater to her natural texture on more lowkey days while also providing a variety of styling options for events. Because when it comes to hair, beauty fans care about practicality above all else. While some haircuts require endless maintenance and styling, a bixie serves as a chic yet low-maintenance way to refresh your look.
