Willy Chavarria Is the Latest Designer To Team up With Zara
Announcing the new “VATISIMO” collection.
Off the back of last week’s divisive announcement with John Galliano, high-street retailer Zara is back with another surprising team-up. This time, Willy Chavarria brings his distinctive DNA to the masses through a new collaborative collection, titled “VATISIMO.” The name comes from the word “vato,” a term of endearment within the Chicano community, and seemingly suggests a community-focused collection inspired by Chavarria’s cultural pride and heritage.
Leaning into the designer’s signature style, the collection favors sharp tailoring and oversized proportions across categories like ready-to-wear, accessories and jewelry. Crafted from Italian fabrics alongside silky cupro and premium leather, the collection is rooted in classic denim and jersey, paired with standout pieces like structured pencil skirts and raw-edged shirts.
As with all of Zara’s recent designer collaborations (of which there have been many), news of the collection has been met with some criticism, and Chavarria fans wonder whether it’ll dilute the designer’s message. Off the back of the brand’s Galliano announcement, it seems fashion fans are currently divided on Zara’s ongoing strategy, but will that change?
